A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-advantaged savings account designed to help individuals save for medical expenses. It is available to those who have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP). HSAs provide several benefits, including tax deductions, tax-free growth, and tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses.
Key Features of an HSA:
- Tax Deductibility: Contributions to an HSA are tax-deductible, meaning the money deposited into the account is deducted from taxable income, reducing the amount of tax owed.
- Tax-Free Growth: The money in an HSA grows tax-free, meaning any interest or investment earnings are not subject to tax.
- Tax-Free Withdrawals: When the funds are used for qualified medical expenses (such as doctor visits, prescription medications, and certain medical treatments), the withdrawals are also tax-free.
- Portability: An HSA is not tied to an employer or a specific health plan, making it portable. Even if you change jobs or health plans, the funds in your HSA remain with you.
- Rollover: Unlike Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), HSA funds roll over from year to year, so you don’t lose any unused money at the end of the year.
Contribution Limits:
The IRS sets annual contribution limits for HSAs, which are higher for individuals age 55 or older. For 2024, the contribution limit for individuals is $4,150 and $8,300 for family coverage. Individuals over 55 can contribute an additional $1,000 in catch-up contributions.
